Dubai, UAE: At Gulfood 2024, His Excellency Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy, announced the launch of the UAE Food Cluster, a transformative initiative aimed at reinforcing food sustainability, safety, and supply chain efficiency. He made this statement during his keynote address at the inaugural Food500 summit, held alongside Gulfood. This strategic move aligns with the nation’s broader agenda to enhance food security, boost local production, and integrate innovative technologies in the food sector.

UAE Food Cluster: A Milestone for the Nation’s Food Security

The UAE Food Cluster serves as a national platform designed to bring together industry leaders, government entities, and private sector players to develop a resilient food ecosystem. With a focus on innovation, technology, and sustainability, the initiative aims to reduce import dependency, support local food producers, and enhance food safety standards across the region.

“We invested in advanced food production technologies, including vertical farming, hydroponics and precision agriculture,” Al Marri said. “We also strengthened our policy with a public-private partnership to enhance food supply chain resilience. Lastly, we supported sustainable food production practices that minimise environmental impact and reduces water and energy consumption.”

GS1 Standards: Powering Food Safety and Transparency

GS1 UAE plays a crucial role in advancing traceability and transparency within the UAE’s food sector. By leveraging GS1 barcoding and digital traceability solutions, businesses can ensure real-time product tracking, from farm to table. This level of transparency is key to preventing food fraud, ensuring product authenticity, and enabling rapid recalls in case of safety concerns.

Al Marri mentioned in his keynote address that artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data analytics are transforming “the way we manage food supply chain, ensure food safety, and enhance production efficiency.”

Optimizing Supply Chain Efficiency with Global Standards

GS1 standards facilitate a more streamlined and data-driven food supply chain by providing a common framework for identification, tracking, and information sharing across all stakeholders. This reduces logistical inefficiencies, enhances inventory management, and minimizes food waste – directly supporting the UAE’s sustainability and economic diversification goals as it actively invests in these technologies.

Collaborating for a Sustainable Future

The UAE’s commitment to food security extends beyond national initiatives. The UAE Food Cluster, combined with GS1 standards, will empower businesses, enhance food safety, and drive sustainable food production and distribution. As the UAE positions itself as a leader in global food security, partnerships between government, industry, and technology providers will be essential in shaping a future-ready, efficient, and transparent food system.

“We stand at a pivotal moment in history,” he noted. “The choices we make today will determine the future of food security for generations to come.”

By integrating global best practices, digital traceability, and sustainability-driven strategies, the UAE is setting a new benchmark for food safety, efficiency, and innovation – securing a more resilient and future-proof food industry for generations to come.
